Holy Week at Cresthill

Holy Week is a time of recalling the events leading up to the resurrection of Jesus. It begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter Sunday. We see Old Testament prophecy fulfilled. We celebrate Jesus the Son’s  sacrifice of His life to make a way for us to be reconciled to God the Father. Join us at all services to get the full picture of the events that happened.

Palm Sunday Service

March 24

Palm Sunday is the day of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to attend the feast of the Passover.

John 12:12-19
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: 15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

Tenebrae Service

Maundy Thursday, March 28

The Tenebrae (Latin word for “shadows”) service focuses on Christ’s suffering. When we pause to reflect on His suffering, it makes His Resurrection even more meaningful. During this service, we read:
The Hours in the Upper Room Matthew 26:17-30
The Hours in Gethsemane Matthew 26:36-46
The Hours of Arrest and Trial Luke 22:47-53, Mark 15:1-15
The Hours at Calvary Luke 23:26-38, Matthew 27:45-56
The Hours in the Tomb Matthew 27:57-60

This service also includes a combination of hymns and contemporary songs, and Communion to commemorate what is commonly called the Last Supper. This somber service ends in darkness and silence.

Easter at Cresthill Church

Easter Sunday Service

March 31
This service is a joyful celebration of what Christianity is all about, and what makes it different from any other belief system: the bodily resurrection of Jesus after His crucifixion and death.

Matt 28:1-10
Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he[a] lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
